Mom Questions If She’s Wrong for Refusing to Give Daughter’s Savings to Her Son

Favoritism between parents and their children is a sensitive and complex issue that can deeply affect family dynamics over time. While many parents deny playing favorites, subtle actions and unequal treatment can have lasting effects on their children’s self-esteem and relationships. To prevent these negative outcomes, parents need to be mindful of their behavior and make an effort to treat all their children fairly. Open communication and addressing any signs of favoritism can strengthen family bonds and create a more harmonious environment for everyone involved.

However, even when parents try hard to provide equal opportunities for all their children, accusations of favoritism can still arise. A little competition among siblings is normal, but when it turns into a sense of entitlement, it can create emotional strain. For instance, discovering that your parents have secretly saved your sister’s rent for years, and planning to give it back when she moves out, might upset you—especially if you’re facing financial difficulties. However, this doesn’t mean you are automatically entitled to that money.

OP ended up on Reddit when her son asked her to help him when he was having financial problems.

OP’s daughter lives with her even though she is 29 since the economy isn’t great.

OP’s daughter does pay her parent’s rent monthly and isn’t dependent on her parents.

OP and his husband decided to save the rent she gives them and have been putting that money aside for years.

When OP’s son found out about the money, they wanted to have a discussion with OP about needing help.

They want OP to give them the money she has saved up for her daughter.

OP refused, but she did offer to gift him some money, so he stood on his feet again, but this got him angry.

The son tried again, saying that they could build that fund up again since his sister wasn’t going to move out anytime soon, but OP wasn’t having it.

This led OP’s son to accuse her of favouring her daughter more than him.

OP made it clear that she had given him the same option of staying with them after college, but he was the one who had refused.

This has obviously caused a bit of family drama, and the OP isn’t sure whether she did the right thing.

Comments on this Story:

People in the comments were 100% on her side.

It is her money, after all.

The son and his wife sound like entitled people.

I have to agree with this commenter.

I don’t see any sort of favouritism going on here.

While it is rent money, it is the OP and her husband’s choice what they want to do with it.

To be fair, OP did offer to help him financially.

It is clear that they are being greedy and want the amount that was saved by his parents for his sister.

He will not stop here if the OP gives in to this instance.
